In this class, students will undertake a reading of the chapters on the sunna from Imam Jassas al-Razi’s brilliant compendium on Hanafi Legal Philosophy, al-Fusul fi’l Usul. The methodology of the Hanafis in relation to deriving law from the sunna is often misunderstood, and this class seeks to remedy that by providing students with an in-depth reading of usul al-fiqh through the lens of a significant and authoritative, early Iraqi jurist. This reading will provide a nuanced insight into Imam Abu Hanifa’s standards for accepting reports from the early righteous community, and much more. *RECORDINGS ONLY*
