Description: This is the second course in the Imam Muhammad al-Shaybani Series (IMSS). This is a course for advanced students of Hanafi law. Through the course of the study, students will acquire a practical theory of Islamic law that will address the following questions:
What is the role of the Mufti?
What is the role of the Qadi?
How does Shariah operate in a society?
What is the ethical guide by which muftis and qadis abide?
How do guidelines of ifta fit within the two Hanafi theories of qiyas and istihsan?

Instructor: Shaykh Sohail Hanif
Dr Sohail is the Chief Executive of the National Zakat Foundation and associate lecturer at Cambridge Muslim College. He previously held the position of BA Manager and Lecturer at Cambridge Muslim College and has also held the position of Head of Sciences at Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. He studied extensively with traditional scholars and holds a PhD from Oxford University. His PhD thesis, which explores Islamic legal epistemology, won the 2019 prize of the British Association for Islamic Studies. He has lectured widely on Islamic law and Qur’anic studies in academic, public and traditional settings.
