This special, year-long course taught in Arabic is a reading and study of the commentary of the Mukhtasar of Imam al-Quduri (d. 428 AH) by Abu Nasr al-Aqta’ (d. 474 AH), the student of Quduri himself. This marvellous work is from the Iraqi fiqh tradition in which the commentator seeks to explain to the student the method of law construction, yet with brevity. al-Aqta‘ abridged his commentary from the books of his shaykh, Imam al-Quduri, and he also made significant additions to it, just as Quduri did before him with Karkhi’s Mukhtasar. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the underlying usul of the Hanafi school, how the masters engaged with the law and its proofs, and how they beautifully recognised patterns and consistency across the entire law. This course is taught in Arabic, but questions, comments and discussions from the student can be posed in English. **Students registering in or post Ramadan 2023 have missed the section on worship (recordings available), but they will be able to attend live for the remainder of the course.**

الوصف: هذه المجالس تعقد لقراءة شرح مختصر القدوري (ت. 428 هـ) لأبي نصر الأقطع (ت. 474 هـ)، وهو تلميذ القدوري، وقد اختصر شرحه هذا من كتب شيخه القدوري، وزاد عليه زيادات وإضافات هامة. وهذا الكتاب على منهج العراقيين، يقصد فيه الشارح إلى تفيهم المتعلم طريقتهم في بناء الأحكام باختصار وإيجاز، ويهتم الكتاب بذكر الأدلة النقلية والعقلية، وبيان سبب اختيار الأقوال في المذهب الحنفي.

الهدف من الدرس: الاطلاع على منهج جديد داخل المذهب الحنفي، وهو فهم أسباب اختيار الآراء وتعليلاتها وفق منهج مشايخ العراق

Instructor: Shaykh Muhammad Yasir Shahin

Muhammed Yasir Shahin is a Researcher at the ISAM Centre for Islamic Studies in Istanbul and a PhD student in Islamic Law. He completed his undergraduate studies at Tripoli University in Lebanon, and studied Law and Sharia at al-Azhar University in Cairo. He obtained his Master’s degree in Islamic Law at Fatih Sultan Mehmet University in Istanbul with the thesis entitled, “The Jurisprudential Difference Between the Hanafi Jurists of Iraq and the Transoxiana”. Muhammed Shahin pursues research about Hanafi approaches to both fiqh and usul al-fiqh, and studies fundamental manuscripts that belong to the Hanafi school. He has edited several rare manuscripts, such as al-Qudurī’s (d. 428/1037) al-Taqrīb.

Length of Course: 50 Weeks (exc. scheduled breaks)

Prerequisites: A complete study of at least one full primer (matn) in Hanafi Sacred Law, such as Mukhtasar al-Quduri, al-Mukhtar li’l Fatwa, Kanz al-Daqa’iq, or similar. Arabic language comprehension is also a requirement.
