Hanafi Masters

About

The Hanafi masters, including Zufar b. al-Hudhayl, had a profound role not only in the formation of the Hanafi school but in the development of Islamic law more generally. In this course, students will take a detailed look at the lives, careers, and thought of the Hanafi masters: Abu Hanifa, Zufar, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad al-Shaybani. They will acquaint themselves with the broader social, political, and intellectual climate within which these jurists lived, learn about their legal and theological contributions, and take a balanced and critical look at some points of controversy raised about them in the realm of law, hadith, and creed. *RECORDINGS ONLY*

Fiqh was planted by ʿAbdullah b. Mas'ud, irrigated by ʿAlqama, harvested by Ibrahim al-Nakhaʿi threshed by Hammad, milled by Abu Hanifa, kneaded by Abu Yusuf, and then baked by Muhammad. Now the rest of Muslims are eating from his bread. (Ibn ʿAbidin, Radd al-Muhtar) By the end of this course, students will have a deep and comprehensive understanding of the four most important figures in the Hanafi school. Previous recordings and resources, and access to the Telegram Group and Forum, will be available to registered students. (Important: if you have taken or are currently taking the History of the Hanafi School, most of the content has been covered there.) Please note that this course has now ended and registration provides you with access to the recordings and resources.
